Changes in the Land
-
From the middle of last December the sea water began to smell and there was an increase in the amount of sludge on the sea bottom.
- About ten days before the quake, the well water became muddy for three days. It was the first such incident in the past several decades.

People
-Five days before I suddenly had a ringing in my ears; the doctor diagnosed it as a difficulty in hearing bass notes.
-Early in the morning on the day of the quake, I woke up sensing something was strange.

Animals
- The night before, an excited dog bit its owner.
- One week before, mice began to be unusually noisy, and disappeared two days before.

Birds
- In the middle of the night four days before the earthquake, some crows were making a tremendous racket in the alley between our house and the neighbors'.
- Several tens of sparrows perched upon the power lines in front of my house from a month before and disappeared after the earthquake.

Fish
- Before the quake, we had a record high catches of squid from the Inland Sea and Awaji Island.
- On the day before the earthquake, in Korakuen Park in Okayama, 40 tiger catfish were grouping in the center of the pond.

Reptiles
- Three days before the quake, two frogs awoke from hibernation and started to croak.
- Vipers came out of hibernation last December 8th and 17th.

Insects
- Cockroaches hobbled out into the center of the room and didn't even try to escape; three days before the quake.
- In September of last year, I saw a number of dead earthworms in the parking lot of the high rise in which I live. From November onward, a lot of bird droppings were found on the soccer grounds.

Plants
- Several days prior to the quake, more than 300 camellia flowers blossomed. It looked like an autumn tree whose leaves have turned red
