Changes in the Land
- From the middle of last December the sea water began to
smell and there was an increase in the amount of sludge on the sea
bottom.
- About ten days before the quake, the well water became muddy for
three days. It was the first such incident in the past several decades.
People
-Five days before I suddenly had a ringing in my ears; the doctor
diagnosed it as a difficulty in hearing bass notes.
-Early in the morning on the day of the quake, I woke up sensing something
was strange.
Animals
- The night before, an
excited dog bit its owner.
- One week before, mice began to be unusually noisy, and disappeared
two days before.
Birds
- In the middle of the
night four days before the earthquake, some crows were making a tremendous
racket in the alley between our house and the neighbors'.
- Several tens of sparrows perched upon the power lines in front of
my house from a month before and disappeared after the earthquake.
Fish
- Before the quake, we
had a record high catches of squid from the Inland Sea and Awaji Island.
- On the day before the earthquake, in Korakuen Park in Okayama, 40
tiger catfish were grouping in the center of the pond.
Reptiles
- Three days before the quake, two frogs awoke
from hibernation and started to croak.
- Vipers came out of hibernation last December 8th and 17th.
Insects
- Cockroaches hobbled out into the center of
the room and didn't even try to escape; three days before the quake.
- In September of last year, I saw a number of dead earthworms in
the parking lot of the high rise in which I live. From November onward,
a lot of bird droppings were found on the soccer grounds.
Plants
- Several days prior to the quake, more
than 300 camellia flowers blossomed. It looked like an autumn tree
whose leaves have turned red
